Shihan Fumio Demura (1938–2023) – Founder of Genbu-Kai
Shihan Fumio Demura was a martial arts legend and the esteemed founder of Genbu-Kai, a worldwide organization dedicated to the traditional practice of Shito-Ryu Karate-do and Okinawan Kobudo. His unparalleled expertise, passion for teaching, and dedication to preserving authentic martial arts shaped generations of students. A pioneer in bringing Japanese martial arts to the global stage, Shihan Demura was not only an exceptional instructor but also a mentor, author, and cinematic inspiration. His influence continues through the many dojos and instructors who uphold his teachings and philosophy. His spirit remains at the core of everything we do at our dojo.

Sensei Charles Hobbib (1955–2024) – Founder of Our New York Dojo
Sensei Charles Hobbib was the driving force behind the establishment of Genbu-Kai New York, dedicating his life to fostering a strong and disciplined community of martial artists in Oneonta, New York. A devoted student of Shihan Fumio Demura, Sensei Hobbib exemplified the values of perseverance, integrity, and dedication. He was not just an instructor but a mentor, instilling in his students the true essence of budo—the way of the warrior. His passing in 2024 was a great loss, but his legacy lives on through his students, who continue to carry forward his teachings with honor and respect.

Sensei Thanh Nguyen – Chief Instructor of Genbu-Kai
Sensei Thanh Nguyen is the Chief Instructor of Genbu-Kai International, traveling across the United States and worldwide to visit and support affiliated dojos. Based at the Hombu Dojo in Santa Ana, California, he has dedicated his life to ensuring the highest standards of Shito-Ryu Karate-do and Kobudo remain intact. Alongside Sensei David Hines, he leads the next generation of Genbu-Kai martial artists, serving as a direct link to the vision and teachings of Shihan Fumio Demura. Sensei Nguyen regularly visits our New York dojo, guiding students and instructors alike in their martial arts journey.

Sensei David Hines – President of Genbu-Kai
Sensei David Hines is the President of Genbu-Kai International and one of Shihan Fumio Demura’s most senior students. Training out of the Hombu Dojo in Santa Ana, CA and being a lifelong martial artist, he has been instrumental in preserving and expanding the Genbu-Kai tradition, ensuring that Shihan Demura’s teachings continue to thrive across dojos worldwide. With a deep commitment to both the technical and philosophical aspects of Shito-Ryu Karate-do and Okinawan Kobudo, Sensei Hines plays a crucial role in guiding the organization into the future. His leadership, alongside Sensei Thanh Nguyen, strengthens the unity and excellence of Genbu-Kai dojos across the globe.

Sensei Efren Rivera – Head Instructor, Genbu-Kai New York
As the Head Instructor of Genbu-Kai New York, Sensei Efren Rivera was personally appointed to continue the dojo’s rich legacy after the passing of his teacher and dear friend, Sensei Charles Hobbib. A dedicated martial artist, Sensei Rivera upholds the traditions of Shito-Ryu Karate with unwavering commitment, ensuring that the dojo remains a center of excellence in Central New York. His leadership reflects the discipline, honor, and camaraderie that Sensei Hobbib instilled in his students. Under his guidance, Genbu-Kai New York remains a premiere dojo where martial artists of all levels can learn, grow, and honor the traditions of our art.
